Longe Line or Lunge Line - Random Thoughts

September 24, 2011 12:29 by Jaime
While some of us may wish that our longe liners (or longeliners) would lounge around on the end of their longeline as opposed to lunging forward at breakneck speed, it is absolutely not correct to call them loungeliners or lungeliners (except in jest).

Well I've been serious with my blog for a while, isn't it time for a random thought, or how about a flat out rant?  My thoughts on showing in the Longe Line Class with your Loungeliner, Lungeliner, or Longeliner.

Lunge - according to Dictionary.com, the definition of lunge is as follows:

noun

1.  a forward thrust,as a sword or knife; a stab.
2.  any sudden forward movement; plunge.

verb (used without object)
3.  to make a lunge or thrust; move with a lunge.

Lounge - according to Dictionary.com, the definition of lounge is as follows:
verb
1.  to pass time idly and indolently.
2.  to rest or recline indolently; loll: We lounged in the sun all afternoon.
3.  to go or move in a leisurely, indolent manner; saunter

Longe - according to Dictionary.com, the definition of longe is as follows:
noun

1.  a long rope used to guide a horse during training or exercise.
verb
2.  to train or exercise (a horse) by use of a longe.
(also present at this link are the tenses of this verb, longed and longeing)

So, while some of us may wish that our longe liners (or longeliners) would lounge around on the end of their longeline as opposed to lunging forward at breakneck speed, it is absolutely not correct to call them loungeliners or lungeliners (except in jest).  Longe Line is an approved class for APHA and NSBA and is a term present many times within the rulebook of each.  Why so many class lists, showbills, and rule sheets at horse shows refer to the class as Lounge Line or Lunge Line is beyond me.  On a positive note though, signs at arenas that state "NO LUNGING" are easy to obey, however.

Similarly, please note the spelling of longeing.  Is it really necessary for me to put the definition of the word longing in here?  It is in no way similar to longeing.  I am longing for Kasino to be good at longeing...that is how they are related ;-).

The point of my random rant?  This isn't really a spelling lesson.  I am certainly prone to my own misspellings at times.  If folks would learn to spell these terms and we could standardize the term across the industry, it would be easier for those seeking information on the topic to find it.  As it stands now, if I want to search Google for information on longe line, I'd better be prepared for several searches as I retry every spelling variation.  As a blogger who often writes on the topic of Longe Line Preparation, I have to wonder if everyone is finding the information I am putting out.  I vary my spellings on purpose, hoping that Google will pick up on that when others search.  Educating and standardizing the spelling would help eliminate that.
