It was a fun horse show
There are several things I could write about today. I could start by saying that we almost didn't come at all. I could add that Kadence was in heat like crazy and majorly distracted all day. I could say how we overcame all of that and managed to finish the day with 4 firsts and 2 seconds, including gets tons of compliments on our pretty darned good showmanship pattern. Perhaps I should tell you how I donated brownies to the kids to sell at their fundraiser but still snuck one to Tari for free. I could even tell you how I picked up Kasino on the way down the driveway and how he self loaded and stood there like a big boy. But at the end of the day, when I am just trying to stay awake long enough to make bedtime a reasonable time, those are not the memories that come to the front of my mind.
I wish I had a picture...
As Kadence and I finished our last class of the horse show, western horsemanship, we were walking along the backside of the grandstand toward the top of the hill where I'd parked the trailer. On the top row (which was slightly above me still sitting in the saddle), I saw a pair of dark eyes watching us and a little hand stick out and wave to us. As I approached, I waved back and then stopped right behind her. I still had to look up to see her, but not much. I think she was astonished at my audacity. I asked her if she'd won anything at the horse show today. At first she was shy, and looked to her mama for approval, but then shook her head no. I held up Kadence's western horsemanship trophy and pushed it through the slats where her tiny arm had just been waving to us. I told her that now she had...if she wanted it.
Oh yes, she did want it. I could tell by the way her big little eyes grew even bigger and the way she started talking to me after that. She was a pretty little girl, with long dark curls and olive skin, but as her mama told her what a good item that trophy would be for show and tell next week, I could see the real beauty begin to show through as she began to talk about the horses. I was wishing right at that moment my phone was on my hip to take a picture, but of course I had just exited the show arena, and it was not.
The real highlight of the day
So as I stood there and talked with Savannah and her family, Shannon (mama), Cheyenne (sister), and Ted (daddy), they asked what this show was all about and what the different classes were. I told them CCWHA was a good club with a real focus on the children. Shannon wanted to know how to get involved and how to get her daughters riding lessons, so I told them the website and pointed out someone local who might be able to help them get lessons. I invited them back for the Halloween Fun Show, and they said they would come.
I hope next year I will see Savannah in the lead line and Cheyenne in the youth classes. You never know..maybe twenty years from now Savannah will write a blog about how a lady in a tan hat on a orange filly helped get her into horses. And if not, well I know I made her eyes sparkle today anyway.
