How to Make the Tail in a Poodle Costume for a Horse

I was undecided how to do this.  I am still not convinced I picked the best way, but here's what I went with...

neoprene tail wrap

My mother used to use a neoprene tail wrap on the mares back when she did live cover with the stallions in the "olden days."  My memory of that wrap was the inspiration for the tail bone cover.  I used a drawstring type tail bag (with extra padding) as the tail pom pom.

I measured the diameter of Kadence's tail at the top (where it meets her back) and at the bottom of her tailbone.  I also measured the length between these two measurements.  My numbers were 10 inches, 5 inches, and 19 inches, respectively.

I had a strip of velcro that was one inch wide, so I added an inch to both diameter measurements of Kadence's tail.  I measured and cut out a four sided piece of fabric that was 11 inches across the top (bottom of this picture), 6 inches across the bottom, and 19 inches straight down the middle.  When I put the cover on my horse's tail, the extra inch will overlap and use the velcro to hold it on, thus bringing it down to the original measurements.

I glued one side of the velcro to the smooth side of the furry fabric.

I trimmed some of the excess length off this side of the fabric before applying the glue so there would be better contact.

The finished tail bone cover will have velcro facing in opposite directions when laying open on the table.

For the tail pom, there could definitely be a better way.  Leave me your suggestions below!  For my drawstring plan, I cut out a large rounded shape of material.  I reinforced the edges by gluing scraps of felt where I was going to put my holes.  I put holes every few inches all the way around the material.  The rest of my pillow stuffing is waiting inside.

I ran latigo through the holes, in and out of the material, and pulled up the edges.  I plan on braiding my horse's tail and inserting it into the drawstring pom like a tailbag.  I will use the latigo to tie through her braid and secure the pom just below her tail bone.  Extra pink ribbon can be tied around the place where the two covers meet to hide the excess material.

For my horse's dog collar, I took a little girl's belt (yeah, go ahead and laugh, mine were all too big for my filly's fine little neck!) and glued some bling down.  I didn't get too fancy here, although I definitely think you could if you wanted too.
